Angel of Mons
In the early days of World War I, something strange was said to have happened during the Battle of Mons in Belgium. It was August 1914, and British forces were badly outnumbered, facing a large and powerful German army. Defeat seemed certain. But then, something unexpected gave the soldiers hope—and has remained one of the most talked-about legends of the war: the story of the Angel of Mons.
As the story goes, British soldiers claimed to have seen glowing, angel-like figures in the sky or standing between them and the enemy. Some described them as tall, winged beings, while others said they looked like medieval archers made of light. Whatever they were, their appearance reportedly caused confusion in the German ranks and helped the British escape what could have been a devastating defeat.
Many believed the angels were sent by God to protect the soldiers. Others thought the visions were a result of stress, exhaustion, or even mass hallucination. The story spread quickly in newspapers and church sermons, giving comfort to families back home. It became a symbol of divine protection and hope during a dark time in history.
Over time, some researchers suggested that the legend may have been inspired by a fictional short story published just after the battle, which mentioned supernatural archers helping British troops. Whether that inspired the soldiers’ claims—or was inspired by them—remains unclear.
To this day, no one can say for sure what really happened at Mons. Some say it was a mix of faith and imagination. Others still believe something beyond explanation occurred on that battlefield. Real or not, the Angel of Mons became one of the most famous war legends ever told.
